Painting with Paul Lewis in Ikaria and Samos 2008

Artist Paul Lewis is offering his unique style of ‘painting experience’ in May, June and September 2008 in association with Sunvil Specialist Greece.

Having lived and painted watercolours in Parga, Epirus for ten years where he also led painting holidays for Sunvil, he has found his recent inspiration in the contrasting charms of Ikaria and Samos in the north-eastern Aegean. His style is light and loose. Sessions with Paul are designed to inspire free-flowing responses to the intense colours and forms of the Greek environment.

Ikaria

Ikaria is an island of elemental beauty : the sea of so many blues, the mountains so vertiginous, the rocks so contorted (not for nothing the Icarus myth set here) - an extraordinary place on many levels. The artist can expect immersion in fabulous colour and light, real human warmth and truly refreshing ‘ time out’ from the humdrum.

Samos

Colourful boats and watery reflections from harbourside tavernas , charming village squares, spring water gushing amongst ancient planes: compared to the wildness of Ikaria, Samos is a softer place where nature mixes with cosmopolitan charm – pack a good bright palette and prepare for a heady mix of colour and light.

The painting

Suitable for any level of ability, painters will enjoy the stimulus of a glorious Mediterranean environment. Beginners will be taught a range of simple skills and be amazed by what can be achieved with a little help from the natural flow of water, transparency of pigment and a lightness of touch. The more experienced will enjoy the conviviality of shared artistic experience and pick up new techniques - perhaps even new ways of ‘seeing’.
The emphasis will be on flexibility, informality and fun. We will meet for
five sessions – each time giving at least three hours for sketching or painting and will sometimes travel out from our ‘base’. There will be plenty of time for chats and sharing.

Equipment

Although primarily aimed at watercolour painters, feel free to use any medium you are comfortable with. If you have not painted in the Mediterranean before you will be amazed at the speed that paint dries – great for spontaneous, fast work. Bring a sketchbook and pencils, make sure you have plenty of paper (watercolour ‘blocks’ such as Arches are ideal) and plenty of blues and turquoise! At least one good sized decent quality brush that will point well – and perhaps a lightweight folding stool.
